Using a variety of involvement models, these programs encourage parents to support their children's schooling by working directly with their children on learning activities in the home and serving as an advocate for better education in their community. Parents are encouraged to model desirable behavior (e.g., reading for pleasure), discuss school matters at home, arrange for appropriate study space, organize and monitor their children's time, check homework on a regular basis, tutor their children at home, help older students make postsecondary plans and select courses which support these plans, advocate for their children when required, attend school functions, discuss their children's progress with teachers, join the PTA, vote in school board elections, attend school board meetings and, where possible, volunteer to help with school activities, work in the classroom and/or take an active role in governance and decision making about school programs at the community, state or national level. Some parenting skills development programs utilize a step-by-step approach for managing specific problems and may incorporate application at home of techniques that were discussed and practiced in the classroom setting. Other programs may offer participatory family workshops which provide opportunities for parents and children to learn and practice methods for dealing with one another under the guidance of a trained facilitator. Prekindergarten Program

School-based prekindergarten program for low-income 4 year-old children who reside in Montgomery County. Classes are two and a half hours. A.M. and P.M. sections available. Transportation provided. Lunch provided for children who qualify for FARMS. Also provides parent involvement, social services, and health services.

Organization Name:	Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA) Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA) The Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA) is dedicated to advancing the Vietnamese American community in Maryland through direct services, advocacy, and education. MVMA implements three cornerstones in its approach: (1) Empowering low-income families and seniors through direct services and providing access to government and private programs. (2) Advocating for social and economic equality by building awareness, capacity and solidarity within the community. (3) Unifying multiple generations of Vietnamese Americans by promoting cultural traditions, history, art and language. Officially incorporated in 1982, MVMA is the oldest Vietnamese American community based organization in Maryland. MVMA was founded to help resettle immigrants and refugees in Maryland. The organization helped people secure housing, furniture, find jobs, study for U.S citizenship tests, and hosted U.S. Naturalization Ceremonies. Today, MVMA has three direct service programs: 1. Vietnamese Parenting Enrichment Project (VPEP) aims to empower parents to be more involved in their child's education. Activities include bi-monthly home visits and quarterly family workshops. 2. Golden Age Project for Seniors (GAPS) bridges language and cultural barriers by linking seniors to vital health resources. Its goal is to help seniors lead a happy, healthy, and independent lives. 3. New Americans Advocacy Services (NAAS) assists immigrants of all backgrounds with applications such as permanent residency and citizenship/naturalization.
