Nourish Now Recovers!
Also Known As: Food Recovery Program
Food Recovery is Nourish Now’s cornerstone program. After extensive research by our Founder and Executive Director, Nourish Now learned that over 50 million pounds of food is wasted annually in Montgomery County, MD alone. Throughout the entire United States, over 96 billion pounds of food is wasted with estimated costs of 1.6 billion dollars to local governments. Nourish Now has developed this program to recover all types of food throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan Area, yielding tremendous results. To date, we have recovered over 500,000 pounds of food, 149,000 pounds of which were rescued in 2014 alone. Averaging 7-10 prepared food donations each week day, Nourish Now also operates an on-call system for night and weekend food recovery opportunities. Nourish Now currently rescues food from over 120 different licensed food providers. Each food donor operates on an individualized schedule coordinated around their needs and the types of food they donate. Bakeries, grocery stores and certain restaurants choose to donate on regular weekly schedules. Other partners donate monthly or notify us of available food. For example, our catering partners donate several times each month from events ranging from tens to thousands of guests. Nourish Now either rescues food items immediately after each event or recovers food from the provider’s facility at an arranged time. We believe that because of their generosity, our donor partners deserve a level of reliability, provided through on-call service and consistent communication.
